Vanishing – Katano Flower

Katano is the shibori technique involving accordion folding the fabric, stitching through all the layers, and dyeing. By folding on the diagonal, a flower shape resulted.

Fine hemp, natural indigo dye, silk thread, found branch.

“Vanishing 1”

The “Vanishing” series of art works are a response to the steadily declining numbers of wildlife in Australia. Just as species are vanishing, so the images on my work gradually disappear.

Various shibori patterns on silk / hemp blend fabric overlaid with fine silk chiffon patterned with hand painted design.

Hung on a found tree branch.

Fabric: Silk / hemp blend, grown on a family farm in Margaret River, Western Australia.

Dye: Natural indigo dye, grown and processed in a village collective in Utrakand, India. Also, dye made from Black Wattle (Acacia mearnsii).

Size: 60cm x 200cm with handmade fringe
